Hot cocoa bombs are all the rage this season. They're fun, whimsical, and a surprise treat when we're seeking comforts in small places. Made from a thin shell of chocolate that easily melts when dropped in hot milk, hot chocolate bombs are stuffed with cocoa mix and other goodies (like marshmallows or peppermint pieces) to create an instant cup of everyone's favorite winter beverage. They're available for purchase from some retailers, but you can also make these tasty treats at home.

The new popular treat to make this year and just perfect to give for Christmas. Not only are they full of chocolate-y goodness, but it’s the experience of watching the outer chocolate shell melt in hot milk releasing the inner cocoa mix and marshmallows, that make them such a delight to receive.

The first thing you have to do is get a bag of chocolates. Melt the chocolate in a bowl above a small pot of hot water, and then use a spoon to dollop the melted chocolate into your molds, smoothing it around the edges until everything is covered. Set in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes, or until the chocolate is firm.

The next phase – and perhaps the most delicious – is to add the filling: you can use small or medium chocolates, marshmallows, cocoa powder, bits of broken candy cane and any other delicious ingredient - this depends on the size of your Hot Chocolate Bombs. Place your bomb in a cupcake paper or in a round cookie cutter to hold it in place as you fill it. You can fill them as much as you want and then close it with the other part of your chocolate molds. Heat up a saucepan on a medium-low heat and carefully melt the edges of the chocolate bomb so you can seal them together. Decorate the cocoa bombs in any way you like with more chocolate, icing, or sprinkles.

Once you finish them, put them in the refrigerator and after a couple of hours, they are ready to eat. Serve in a mug, pouring hot milk over the bomb and stirring until completely melted.

They are super easy to make, you can have so much fun decorating them with cute sprinkles and candy and once you pour over the hot milk you have a delicious mug of hot chocolate to enjoy filled with a fun treat like mini marshmallows! These are perfect for any occasion and make such a great gift for chocolate lovers. Whether you decorate them for the holidays, Valentine’s day, or even birthdays they are always fun.

PRO TIPS FOR MAKING THIS RECIPE

  • Use a clean paintbrush to brush the chocolate evenly in the molds making sure to cover all the sides.

  • Let the chocolate molds set in the freezer, they set really fast (about 10 minutes).

  • When removing the chocolate from the mold and assembling them it’s a good idea to wear gloves to avoid any fingerprints on the surface.

  • Instead of chocolate milk powder, you can fill these bombs with your favorite hot chocolate powder, it’s also a great way to switch up the flavor by using chocolate orange hot chocolate powder, mint chocolate, salted caramel, and more!

  • Use candy melts and small piping bags to decorate your chocolate bombs. Think pink and red for Valentine’s day, red, white, and green for Christmas etc.

  • Sprinkles, edible glitter, and chocolate chips/chunks are a great way to jazz up your cocoa bombs. Drizzle over a small amount of melted chocolate and top with sprinkles so they stick.
