Christmas Elf Tradition
It's almost that time of year again. The time of year when we are filled with excitement, busyness, lots of parties and lots and lots of delicious, fattening food. It's also a time when our Elves come out to keep an eye on our kids. I've noticed over the years that the elf has two camps – those that do it begrudgingly and those that truly have fun creating elf antics in their home. For me, I love coming up with new and fun things for our elf to do. Yes, I'm the mom who printed a calendar and jotted down a few ideas so that nights wouldn't be stressful with what the heck is the elf going to do next? Even with a list of ideas, some nights it is still a pain. Sure. But lots of things in parenting can be a bit of a pain. My children's delight every morning makes it totally worth it.
I believe part of the joy of Christmas is making memories with our families. For my kids, I hope that when they look back on the Decembers that Ramone visited, they will remember how much fun they had looking for him each day. The tradition of the Christmas Elves goes back a long time and I hope when my kids become parents they will keep the tradition alive with their own kids. Do you know the history of Christmas Elves?
Elves are present in Germanic, British and Scandinavian folklore in which they are often referred as light elves (good) or dark gnome like elves (bad). In pagan times, Elves were believed to guard homes against evil. If you were good, the elves would be good to you, but if you were bad, they would play tricks on you. To keep the elves well fed, happy and out of mischief, people left a bowl of porridge on the doorstep at night.
In Iceland the Yule Lads visit homes each day to leave presents and play tricks on children between December 12 and 24. In the Netherlands, Father Christmas’s side kick is called Zwarte Piet (Black Peter), in Germany Knecht Ruprecht. In certain regions of France, Père Fouettard (the literal and rather scary translation is “Whipping Father”) accompanies Santa Claus, distributing coal to naughty children. One of the main Christmas characters in Denmark is a mischievous elf named Nisse. Christmas is a time when Nisse can have his fun. Nisse is said to live in the lofts of old farmhouses and he enjoys to play jokes.
Already associated with story telling and magic, elves began to be associated with Christmas in the mid – 1800s, when they became Santa’s helpers. Christmas celebrations were gathering popularity and Scandinavian writers penned the elves’ role as we know it today: good hearted fairy like helpers of Santa Claus that are sometimes mischievous.
Folklore tells that elves make sudden appearances in families in the run up to Christmas. They keep an eye on children, check who’s naughty and who’s nice and report their findings back to Santa. In different countries, Santa’s helpers go by different names, but the traditions retain many similarities – mainly centered around encouraging children to be on their best behavior. And I mean really what parent doesn’t want some help with that? Thank you Ramone!

It's Farmers Market Season!
Summer comes with pool parties, festivals, and (the best part), farmers markets! Many farmers markets across the country have officially opened up their outdoor venues as of the May long weekend. Visiting a farmers market is a great way to bring the community together and support local farmers, chefs and crafters. And this season especially it brings a renewal of community spirit that is so needed as we long to be around people again. It is just a great opportunity to get out, shop and enjoy the sun!
Picture it: It's early morning, the sun is shining and the rich smell of coffee and a plethora of other aromas coat the air. Sleepy voices laugh and talk, music plays, and colorful, vibrant people wander through the crowded parking lot. Everything seems to be teeming with life. This is the farmers market.
We love them. Some are seasonal. Some are open only on weekends. People shop under tents and pay vendors cash. It’s all very charming, and a nice alternative to grocery stores. And there are so many treasures to be found – raw honey, eggs with beautiful orange-colored yolks, cut flowers, artisan cheeses, kombucha, and the list goes on.
The fruits, vegetables, grains, seafood, meats, cheeses, eggs, and milks you buy at the farmers market are the freshest and most delicious available. Fruits are allowed to ripen fully in the field and brought straight to you. Food is all seasonal, you get to reconnect with nature, weather and turning of the year. Eating and cooking with each season is something we need to find our way back to. In-season produce is not only at the peak of its deliciousness, but it is healthier too. That’s because the fresher it is, the more nutrient-dense it’s likely to be and it doesn’t get much fresher than your local farmers’ market!
Here’s an article discussing 5 benefits of eating seasonal produce – there’s also a list included so you know which fruits and veggies are in season. The first time cherries appear, usually in late May, is a sign stone fruit season has officially kicked off and the floral apricots of June will be next, followed by sugary peaches in July and August.
Not every market is the same, but look for lettuce, Asian greens, scallions, radishes, fresh peas (both edible-pod and shell peas), green garlic and garlic scapes, throughout the next month. June is also the season for locally grown strawberries. Also be aware that some market vendors carry fresh eggs, dairy products, and meats, while others sell baked goods, natural foods and arts and crafts.
Farmers markets provide an opportunity to buy meat directly from the farmer. I recommend purchasing the best quality meat your food budget will allow because when it comes to protein and fat quality is key. Talk with the farmers and ask them about their farming methods. They will appreciate your interest! This is your opportunity to learn how the meat you eat is raised so don’t be shy about asking questions. Ask if the chicken and pork were pasture-raised and if the beef was grass-fed and finished.
Plus, there’s plenty to buy that doesn’t require a vegetable peeler. There’s a dude selling eight kinds of olive oil, a father-son duo with orchids in three sizes and an adorable elderly couple offering sticky jars of honey in every shade of amber. A few random purveyors join the fun, too: the overly friendly hummus guy, the Peruvian lady who weaves huge baskets and the wheatgrass juice-slinging hippie chick. Like a cast of sitcom characters, no week is complete without an appearance from each of them. I think everyone can agree on the importance of supporting your local community. By shopping at your local farmers market, you directly impact the livelihood of the farmer you buy from.
Need help finding a farmers market close to you? Visit https://www.localharvest.org/farmers-markets/ or https://sustainableagriculture.net/blog/national-guide-to-finding-local-food/
When you shop at local farmers markets, you are supporting local farmers, the local economy, our regional food resiliency and reducing your carbon footprint.
Make a plan to include a visit to your local farmers market as part of your regular grocery shopping routine. It’s a great opportunity to support your community and nourish yourself and your family with seasonal foods. See you at the market!
Bumble Bee Baby Shower Brunch
Flowers are blooming and bees are a buzzing - Spring is officially here! Take that inspiration and craft a fun buzz worthy bee themed baby shower brunch. It's the perfect theme to carry from What Will it Bee? gender reveal to “Mommy to Bee” or “Sweet as Can Bee” baby shower. Then into the nursery décor and baby's first birthday with “Happy Bee-Day”. Whether it’s for a child’s birthday party, a springtime get-together, a baby shower, or a garden party, this bumble bee theme is so cute and tons of fun! With a theme this versatile there's an abundance of amazing ideas.
Honeycombs, cheerios, and other bee-adjacent cereals can be displayed in glass containers throughout the party. Mini bumble bee candies to dot table clothes and place settings. And for a truly impressive main course: honeycomb-shaped waffles topped with golden honey, fresh whipped cream, and bee candy.
Some cute paper straws, a bouquet of flowers, or some balloons go a long way and are all inexpensive when you are decorating for a bee theme. Mix and match yellow and black balloons, vibrant streamers and party banners. Go all out by creating a balloon arch. All it takes is a few colors of balloons, wire, and command hooks to take your space to the next level. You can use it as a photo booth background or as a little style boost above a gift or light bites table.
If you want to throw your own bee-themed spring event, get creative with party favors, food, and décor. You can even encourage guests to dress in yellow or black or give them some real honeycomb and jam to take home with them after.
So if you or someone you love is a fan of all things bee, look no further than this collection. Bright and cheery, yellow gold adds a flash of energy this spring and has us thinking of the luxurious summer days ahead! The bright pops of yellow are balanced by sweet pastel tones, making it a spunky and fun palette. You'd better bee-lieve we're buzzing with excitement over these designs.
Cinco de Mayo | Virtual Fiesta
To help you have a fun celebration at home, we rounded up some easy Cinco de Mayo ideas that you can try while staying safe and social distancing. Immerse yourself in the culture of Mexico, have a few drinks and a few laughs. Support your local businesses where you can and party knowing you won’t have to find a safe way to get home after a few too many margaritas.
The first thing you need to host a virtual fiesta is a video conferencing platform. Zoom, Google Meet, Facetime are all options. Download one beforehand and test it out to ensure the best quality and experience when it comes to your fiesta. Check the signal strength in the room where you want to have your service; you may need to purchase a WIFI booster or mesh system. If you want to make it seem like you’re all together, set a place for the computer, so you can all video chat during the night. Depending on your group, you may also want to consider designating a “tech captain.” That person can teach your less-tech-savvy relatives how to use Zoom in advance and help sort out any technical issues that arise day-of, so they don’t derail the entire event.
Just because the party is going virtual, it doesn’t mean beautiful invitations are out of the question. Make your guests feel extra special. Send out something festive in the mail for a personalized touch. Paper invitations also give you a chance to include some special extras for your invited guests, like photos, game cards, raffle tickets and whatever other extras that will help guests feel included in your big event. They also serve as a great keepsake! If you are sending paper invites, then you will need to adjust the invitation wording so that guests know that it is a virtual party.
Whether you’re going full out dance party or just want some ambient music, the right playlist is key. Let everyone share the evening and feel connected by creating a shared playlist. You can create collaborative playlists using Spotify, where every household can access the same playlist. Or create a playlist on YouTube, if having a video in the background is your thing, where everyone can have similar musical experience and create a lasting memento of the night that can be played again in the future.
While you won’t be eating the same meals, you can plan ahead to get everyone to make their own versions of taco night. Include the basics, like your choice of meat, tortillas, rice and beans. Don’t forget toppings like cheese, sour cream and Pico de Gallo.
To give your virtual Cinco de Mayo party a little more flare, have all participants dress up for the occasion. The colors of the Mexican flag are green, white and red. Make things extra fun with an award for best costume. Include multiple categories like kids, group and most creative. Have participants vote for the best outfit by sending in comments to the host. Whoever receives the most votes, will have bragging rights until next year! You can screenshot or record the call depending on the platform to document these fun moments.
As fun as it is to celebrate with food and drink, it is also important to know the true history of this day as well. Cinco de Mayo officially celebrates the 1862 Mexican army’s victory over the French. Educate yourself about the history of Mexico, try some authentic recipes, listen to Mexican musical artists. Do a little research and you might find you love the holiday even more knowing where certain traditions originated.
Luckily, there are so many virtual Cinco de Mayo ideas you can use to have a fun fiesta at home this year. There are still ways to support your local Mexican-owned businesses, have fun with friends and loved ones and—of course—eat and drink your heart out.

Hosting A Drive By Baby Shower
These are definitely weird times we’re living in. Because of social distancing, we’ve had to get creative in how we can celebrate our loved ones. As a result, the drive-by baby shower was created. Instead of gathering all together in a house or venue and mingling with food & drinks, guests will form a parade in front of the mom-to-be’s house. They’ll drive by at a designated time, drop off gifts (because that is the purpose of a baby shower, after all), shout their well-wishes, blow kisses, honk, and make mom and baby feel special!
When you host a drive by baby shower, things are a little different straight out of the gate. But, not everything has to be! We’re all used to ordering party supplies, invitations, and cupcakes or a special cake–and all of these things can still exist! Here are some great tips to make sure the shower goes by smoothly.
1. Choose a short time frame for the drive-by
Give guests a 30-60 minute window to drive by the house, to keep up the parade vibe, and so the pregnant mom isn’t sitting on her front porch for hours on end.
Even though this is a less formal type of baby shower, an invitation is still nice to send. An email or evite invitation is totally fine, but it’s always helpful for people to have all the details in one place, and for the mom-to-be to have something to print off and put in her baby book!
3. Set up a table at the curb for gifts
Make sure guests have a designated spot to drop their gifts, so they can maintain their 6-foot social distance.
4. Decorate the house and yard
Part of the fun of hosting a baby shower is decorating the whole house and bringing the party to life with a fun theme or color scheme. There’s no reason you can’t still do the same thing at a drive-by shower! Pick up balloons, yard signs, streamers, whatever you can to jazz it up and bring a smile to your pregnant friend’s face. Since this is not your typical shower, you’ll want to spend extra time and care on the décor so mama feels extra special even though she can’t have a traditional shower. If you’re able to rent tents or know anyone who owns them, I recommend setting those up, as well. Why? Rain! Plus, they provided us a shady place where the mama and her hosts could rest.
5. Send out activities in advance
Just send the activity in advance, and have guests fill it out and bring it with them to drop off for the mama-to-be to read later. These game cards have a wide range of options for any baby shower. Not only do they give guests some fun talking points, but you can make them into a little booklet afterwards, for mom-to-be to keep and remember after baby arrives.
6. Curbside goodie bags
Goodie bags are normally considered par for the course for kids’ birthday parties, but since your guests won’t be lingering over a buffet of any kind, it’s fun to pack up some memorable goodies for them to take home. Add a beverage station with consideration to the weather. Cold lemonade or a mimosa for the guests is perfect for summer; while cider or hot cocoa would be more relevant for winter.
Food options you could consider for a drive-through baby shower include:
Cookies in treat bags
Themed cupcakes packaged individually
To-go lunch boxes with tea sandwiches, chips, and a cookie
As we already discussed for drinks, consider options based on your theme or color scheme, and the weather.
From drive-by celebrations to virtual ones, people around the world are getting creative on ways to continue the celebrations. Drive-By Baby Showers won't replace traditional ones, but they will make the expecting parents feel loved. Let your drive-by shower serve as a true celebration of you and baby! The future with your little one is so bright.
Same Love, Smaller Wedding
Many couples are opting to downsize their wedding from a large event with a sizable guest list to something smaller and more intimate due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. While there are certainly a range of upsides to having a small wedding, it can be difficult for some couples to come to terms with the fact that their wedding vision is drastically changing from the original plan. Luckily, there are many ways to get excited about and embrace the idea of switching to a small wedding such as:
There are fewer details to worry about - booking, hiring, finding, paying for, organizing, etc., including, but not limited to: décor; a photo booth; a DJ; a live band; audio rental equipment; a zillion place cards; a complicated seating plan; addressing a million invitations by hand; a giant, multi-tiered cake that doesn’t actually taste very good; a unity candle; doves; a sand ceremony; a rose ceremony; a signature cocktail; matching outfits for an army of attendants; and a ring bear(er)?
It’s easier to keep costs down - fewer people basically means less of everything, from food to favors. This also allows you to splurge in ways you might not have with a larger wedding. Having fewer guests means being able to invest a good part of the budget in other aspects, such as the set-ups, the photo/video service, the dresses, and the entertainment of the guests. You can ‘pamper’ your guests more by organizing some surprises for them (for example a tourist visit, a welcome dinner, a brunch, a tasting) during the days before or after the wedding. Also, you can really choose any location, which would be impossible to achieve for a classic wedding.
You will actually get to spend time with your guests - instead of trying to say a passing hello to 150 people (many of whom you may not actually know all that well), you get proper face time with everyone there. Whether you’re trimming your wedding guest list because of COVID-19 or planning a micro wedding from the get-go, we know it might be difficult to choose a small number of guests. There is also beauty in only having the people who are closest to you celebrating the special day together. And now that most everyone is comfortable using streaming services, you can live stream your ceremony for family members and friends who aren’t on the guest list.
You get to think outside-of-the-box - Again, this is true for all weddings, but consider things like how much easier of a time you’ll have finding an alternative venue if you’re not trying to fit several hundred people into it. Consider how much fun it might be to have your favorite food truck instead of traditional catering. Consider whether you want to cater your wedding yourself, if that’s what you’re into. It’s not easy to plan a major event for 100 people or more. A smaller wedding allows you so much freedom for creativity and uniqueness. Get creative with décor ideas and pamper guests with a delicious treat or surprise entertainment.
Don’t confuse the micro wedding with an elopement, which implies a spontaneous, quick wedding with few (if any) guests. The micro wedding contains all the elements of a traditional ceremony, including a beautiful venue, photographer, cake, and décor. The difference is that it’s on a much smaller scale. The micro wedding offers a solution that allows couples to have their tiny cake, and to eat it with those they care about most. The change has created a beautiful opportunity for all couples going forward to focus only on the things that best represent their love. Whether you choose to make your day special with catering from your favorite restaurant or a scavenger hunt for your guests, it’s sure to be a day where you make extraordinary memories spending quality time with those you love most.
There are clearly so many reasons to get excited about having a small wedding, even if it’s not what you originally had planned. It’s no secret that COVID-19 changed the wedding industry. From forcing couples to change their wedding plans to a surge of new terms such as “micro wedding” and “virtual wedding,” couples are navigating uncharted territory while planning a micro wedding.
We’re here to help. Send follow up “change of plans” invitations for those few who are still invited. Make sure you still let everyone else know of the postponement through the same methods. In our Zazzle store, we have an exquisite selection of wedding invitations & stationery that will set the right tone for weddings of any style. Small Business Brand Packaging
What is the first thing that a customer sees when he or she comes across a product? It is indeed the packaging! The packaging is what creates the perception of the brand towards customers. The right packaging does so much for your products and your brand, why not optimize it to boost your sales? What does your small business packaging say about you? Don’t let your business be forgotten with boring packaging. Less is more for small business packaging. Best-selling products don’t need expensive packaging or intricate designs everywhere. A simple and sharp look is enough to attract customers.
There are three different “layers” of product packaging – outer packaging, inner packaging and product packaging. You have to identify what layers your products need. You may require one of these packaging layers or may be all of them.
Add a bonus inside your packaging with your product. Include a preprinted card thanking a customer for their purchase with perhaps a discount code for their next purchase. Small touches like that can get you a loyal buyer for life. Even a business card may connect with the right person. As a small business owner, you can include anything you want with a product that you think will capture the hearts and minds of customers. Think about what you want your brand to convey. Is it a sense of nostalgia or innovation? Excitement or comfort?
There are millions of products available on the market. Consumers are bombarded with hundreds of product packaging information and visual imageries regularly. There’s even too much going on with packaging designs with most of the product today. It really overwhelms customers. Develop a simple, minimalistic and yet aesthetical design relevant to your product. Be subtle with the color scheme and vibrancy of the packaging design. When someone buys a product with an aesthetically pleasing package they are more likely to share pictures or tell their friends about it.
Not only is it a relatively cost-effective form of marketing, but it’s common for customers to share examples of excellent packaging on social channels. This can help to spread the word about your business. Similarly, including little touches, such as branded paper or product tips, will help to cement your brand as a quality one. This simultaneously shows your customers you care, and is a powerful marketing tool. What have you got to lose?
Whether your brand identity allows you to be creatively fun with your products or you just want to do something out-of-the-box, we have have products for all your needs.
Yardi Gras | Mardi Gras Float Houses
Happy Yardi Gras, Y’all! We love that people are finding socially distant ways to celebrate the Carnival season amid the pandemic. So what is Yardi Gras? The way this works is residents are decorating their homes like a Mardi Gras parade float. Then anyone can view all of the homes in the ‘parade’ by walking, biking, or driving for a tour of the different neighborhoods to see all of the decorations. On Mardi Gras Day, everyone will ‘parade at home’ by dancing on their porches and throwing things to their neighbors. Traditions have always evolved and I think we are going to see some super creative ways to still connect and have fun this Mardi Gras because normalizing our lives, in small or big ways, is important in moving forward.
